After nearly 50 years of seeing Russians as the enemies, most ill-informed Americans old enough to remember the Soviet Union have ingrained a variety of negative stereotypes about the residents of the former "Empire of Evil." Supposedly, the Russians "care more about vodka than human life." Supposedly, they are "gruesome." Supposedly they like "to use their most advanced weapons to bring hell" to places out of "sheer hatred." A recent editorial in The Dartmouth, titled "Chechnya " The Forgotten War," by Adil Ahmad tried to invoke all these stereotypes in order to malign Russia for exercising its legitimate right to self defense and territorial integrity. Ahmad hopes to exploit the ignorance of the average American about the nature of the conflict. He would like to spin the reality of the war into a heart-wrenching story of the noble little nation valiantly and honorably fighting a war of liberation against the evil oppressive occupying power. Sound familiar?

The Moose is an inadequate mascot, and the process that led to its emergence as the Student Assembly's choice to replace the Big Green exemplifies democracy misused and gone awry. The inherent difficulty in choosing a new mascot and essentially creating a tradition for thousands of students, alumni and fans does not excuse the Student Assembly's approach to the issue or the end result -- an awkward mascot that received the support of only one-third (35.4 percent) of the 2,300 students who voted.

"I hate the word welcoming." This was the proclamation of Harvey Silverglate at a speech he gave Tuesday at Dartmouth. He uses this statement to introduce his beliefs about when, why and how free discourse vanished from college campuses. Never have I heard an argument that more poignantly encapsulated my disgust with the Dartmouth administration than Silverglate's speech. His lecture and book "The Shadow University," is the type of conversation about freedom of speech that we are sorely missing on this campus. The mass quantities of civil liberties violations and resulting reverse discrimination are testaments to this.

Hanover, it is said, is a quintessential New England college town. You can even find Baker Tower on the corporate logo for the town of Hanover. Yet, is Hanover really a college town, or just a town which happens to have a college? Increasingly, it seems, Hanover looks less like a college town. Hanover certainly lacks the buzz found in bigger college towns like Berkeley or Cambridge. There are few cafs and other hangout spots. Street buskers are nowhere to be found. What is shocking is that even basic student needs are no longer being met.

Bob Dylan said this many years ago and although I once thought otherwise, I am now convinced he was referring to college. Specifically to Dartmouth. Even more specifically, to me and my friends and the past two years we've spent here. I remember my first year here, when '02 meant senior and '05 meant freshman, and had you told me then that one day there would be '07s roaming the Green I would have burned you for witchcraft. Now, of course, '05 means junior and while I struggle to accept the grim reality of that fact, I am forced to look back on the two years I've spent here and how things have changed.
