How can you explain why "There's Something About Mary" became one of the summer's few standout movies and one of the biggest sleeper hits of all time, while other low-brow comedies like "BASEketball" fail to make the basket ... or is it score a run?

"There's Something About Mary" crosses the line -- repeatedly -- but that's what makes the movie so appealing. Bobby and Peter Farrelly ("Dumb and Dumber," "Kingpin") are well known for their tasteless and surprising antics, and "Mary" does not change their reputation; in fact, the movie enhances it.

Dartmouth and Harvard started out the season in similar fashion. After losing their first two contests, the teams were struggling not only to win but to find themselves. Indeed, they were lost in the New England Wilderness, walking side by side down the losing path.

The Big Green field hockey team has had a streaky season to date, and yesterday's contest against the University of Massachussets continued the trend. Dartmouth fell 3-1 to the Minutewomen courtesy of two second-half goals from UMass to break a 1-1 halftime deadlock. The loss evened the Big Green's record at 7-7, with a 2-3 mark in the Ivy League.

At its meeting on Tuesday night, the Student Assembly voted to return $5,000 of its $30,000 yearly allocation to the Undergraduate Finance Committee in a resolution urging the College to increase funding for student organizations.
