The Big Green rowers had a strong showing in their first races of the season the past weekend as they warmed up for the season's biggest race, the Head of the Charles this upcoming weekend. While the men's varsity heavyweight squad traveled to Rochester, N.Y. for the Stonehurst Capital Regatta, the rest of the team competed in the Head of the Connecticut competition at Middleton, Conn.

As the Ivy League enters Week Five and the mid-point of the season, Dartmouth finds themselves in a familiar position, sitting atop the standings and looking back at most of the league. Unfortunately for Big Green fans though, that pack is nipping at their heels as Harvard has a share of first-place with Dartmouth, as both teams boast a 2-0 record in Ancient Eight play.

In the few weeks I have spent at Dartmouth, I have found that acronyms are a vital part of any student's vocabulary. HTH, EBA's and BEMA are among the most popular. The one that bothers me, however, is PC -- politically correct.

It seems the great majority of Dartmouth graduates these days pursue one of two postgraduate plans -- graduate school or the corporate world. But recent alumnus Brandon del Pozo '96, one of the more high-profile students at the College of the past few years, works for a more non-traditional employer: the New York Police Department.

With the recent completion of the Task Force on Social Life's report assessing the state of undergraduate social options, Dean of the College Lee Pelton has formed an implementation committee to ensure that its guidelines are carried out.

Amarna, one of the College's two coed undergraduate societies, was formed in 1994 with the goal of offering a place where men and women could interact comfortably. So it funny -- if not a bit ironic -- that in the almost three years since, the organization's make-up has become overwhelmingly female.

Helped by a strong showing by Alpha Xi Delta sorority, the College's Panhellenic sororities gained a whopping 60 more members this Fall than a year ago -- a rise of close to 40 percent.

One would think that if Oliver Stone could turn the lives of two deceased presidents ("JFK," "Nixon") into exciting, operatic cinema, he could make a tale of sex, money and murder in a hot and sweaty desert town jump off the screen. Unfortunately, in his first foray into non-political filmmaking in quite some time, Stone lays it on too thick for too long.

The imminent departure of our eminent President, James O. Freedman, may be old news to many by now, but I think it worth revisiting. After all, it's not every day (not even every decade) that one gets to reflect on a departing president of Dartmouth and to look forward to an arriving new one.

I realized the other day that there are a whole line of useless products out there. Fish sticks are an example. From the way I see it, you either like fish, or you don't. Personally, I don't like fish no matter what it looks like. I'd like to see what went on at the marketing meeting that created fish sticks, "Well boss, nobody's really buying this fish, but maybe if we put it into the shape of a stick, everyone will love it." That ain't flyin' with me boy, it could be fish in the shape of a really cool car, and I'm still not gonna dig it.

I just got my DarTalk bill. Oh, how I love DarTalk. The first thing I noticed was that they charged me $11 for service fees. I'm a UGA, so I don't have to pay those fees. I called my dear DarTalk friends, and they informed me that they didn't know that I was a UGA, so they had to charge me this month. They assured me that I would get the money refunded in October. I almost would have believed this if I hadn't written UGA in huge letters across my new account form.

When College President James Freedman three weeks ago announced his resignation, effective next summer, the one word on the lips of many people at the College was: why?
