Oscars are still up in the air, with no frontrunner in sight

(11/23/04 11:00am)

As Oscar season comes into full swing, one can't help but notice the lack of a true frontrunner. This year we are certainly lacking a "Return of the King" or "Titanic," whose critical reception and wide appeal carried them both to record-tying sweeps of 11 awards. Indeed, 2004 may go down in Academy Awards history as somewhat of a free-for-all -- a possibility that could open the doors to more unconventional films being nominated for big awards.

Squash dominates season-opening home matches

(11/23/04 11:00am)

The Dartmouth men's and women's squash teams both opened their regular seasons with a four-match squash festival at the Berry Courts over the weekend. The men are coming off one of their most successful seasons in school history, finishing fifth in the country in the '03-'04 campaign, while the women's team also turned in a strong season last year by finishing sixth nationally.

DDS vs. Common Sense

(11/23/04 11:00am)

Scanning the breakfast menu at Norma's restaurant in the stylish Parker Meridien Hotel in New York City, you tend to notice a couple of things. First, you notice the tempting, ambrosial quality of every single tantalizing item listed: Blueberry pancakes with Devonshire cream, waffles stuffed with fruit with a crackly brle top; it's a big, classy smorgasbord. The second thing you'll notice is more shocking than it is tempting; it's a $1,000 omelet. Named self-parodically "The Zillion Dollar Lobster Frittata," the "super size" omelet features a whole lobster, six eggs and 10 ounces of Sevruga caviar.

Furstenberg reveals recipe for diversity

(11/23/04 11:00am)

Editor's note: While Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Karl Furstenberg may have only a short interaction with Dartmouth students, he plays a critical role in sustaining the Dartmouth experience year after year. Now serving in his 15th year at the College, Furstenberg spoke with The Dartmouth on issues concerning the College, the admissions process and his view on the state of the student body.

Dartmouth raises its voices up for Dashboard

(11/22/04 11:00am)

It might be hard to argue that Saturday night's Dashboard Confessional concert was anything but a success. The Programming Board was pleased to announce that the show sold out, providing a crowd of 2000 people for the emo-pop group and opener Howie Day. Fans drove from far and wide, including places like Oklahoma and Ohio. Other fans flew in from Florida and Texas. At 8 a.m. people were already lining up at the door.

Fall crew season ends strong at the Tail of the Charles

(11/22/04 11:00am)

In their final race of the season, the Dartmouth heavyweight and freshmen lightweight crews saw mixed results in Boston Saturday at the Tail of the Charles. The 2.5-mile course started at the MIT boathouse and ended at the Harvard men's boathouse, including the infamous Weeks Bridge turn, which can make or break a crew's placement in the last mile.
