Men's Tennis:
Ian Kelsey ’18, captain of the men’s golf team and one of two seniors on the team, has helped lead a surging Big Green golf team as they look ahead to the upcoming Ivy League Championship in late April. The tournament will be held at Stonewall Orchard, a course just outside of Philadelphia. He claimed his first collegiate title this past weekend at the Cornell Spring Invitational in Florida; it was the first tournament win by a Big Green golfer in nearly two years. Previously, Kelsey has been named First Team All-Ivy and finished second at the Ivy League Championship as a sophomore. He is pursuing an economic major at the College.
Falcon Wright is one of the Dartmouth Dining Services workers at Collis Café. He was in the stir-fry line before the winter term but has since been moved to Collis Late Night. He is 22 years old and is passionate about cars.
Basketball
Egyptian comedian Bassem Youssef presented “Tickling Giants,” a documentary about Youssef’s life, with a following question and answer session in the Black Family Visual Arts Center’s Lowe Auditorium on Feb. 28. In addition to the sold-out screening, Youssef also shared his story the next day in a public lecture entitled “Laughing Through the Arab Spring” in Silsby 028.
Originally from Laval, Québec where he attended Académie Sainte-Thérèse, Dan Martin ’21, is currently playing No. 2 singles for men’s tennis. Despite dropping two matchups last week, the Big Green is competing at a historic level this season, beginning the 2017-2018 season 12-0, its best start in program history. Dartmouth is currently ranked No. 19 in the country, though it previously held the No. 14 spot in mid-February, which was also a program record. Martin, who is currently No. 101 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Division I men’s national singles rankings, has played an important role on the team all season. In a 5-2 victory over the University of Minnesota on Feb. 9, Martin beat then-No. 34 Stefan Milicevic. Before Dartmouth, Martin finished second at the U16 Canadian Championship and third at the U18 Canadian Championship.
Dartmouth hosted the Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Championships this past weekend at Leverone Field House. Heps brought together all eight Ivy League schools to compete for the conference title. Dartmouth gets the chance to host the championship every four years,.
In January 2018, the College released the results of its sexual misconduct survey fielded in spring 2017. The results come two years after the Association of American Universities administered a sexual misconduct and sexual assault survey in 2015.
When thinking about sports, some people typically consider different games, matches and meets and the many rules associated with the sport. Others may think about their own experience as an athlete and the fond memories associated with it. Still, some may think about their favorite teams and athletes. Although these are vital components of sports, the unsung heroes in athletics are the fans. Fans are a crucial part of games as they have the ability to rally behind teams after a challenging defeat or advocate for them in their biggest triumphs.
On Jan. 30, Unai Montes-Irueste ’98, former vice president of the Dartmouth Association of Latinx Alumni, published an open letter on Facebook declaring that he is cutting all ties with the College over its handling of issues surrounding undocumented students.
Dartmouth’s financial statement for fiscal year 2017, released in October 2017, shows strong endowment performance and a decline in operating expenses compared to the previous year, alongside relatively small growth in revenues.
While travel is a major component of every Dartmouth team’s season, the time spent on the road and the accommodations athletes receive differs among teams.
Miles Wright ’18, co-captain of the men’s basketball team, scored his 1,000th career point against Cornell University this past Friday, making him the 29th Dartmouth player to reach the milestone. Wright, a Boston native and a sociology modified with African and African American Studies major, averages 12.1 points per game, putting him at 14th place in the Ivy League and second at Dartmouth.
On Tuesday, Dartmouth Outing Club First-Year Trips director Lucia Pierson ’18 and assistant director Dalia Rodriguez-Caspeta ’18 announced the 19-member 2018 Trips directorate.
Basketball
With six matches to go before playoffs, the men’s and women’s squash teams reached the midpoint of their seasons this month. Both teams finished their 2016-2017 season in ninth place: a drop for the men who started the season ranked eighth and an improvement for the women who started the season ranked ninth then dipping to 11th for a brief moment in the middle of the season. The college nationals are broken into flights of eight teams. The top eight, the A division, compete for the national championship whereas the other brackets of eight compete for cups or trophies. Each team’s final season ranking is used to determine their initial rank the following season.
