Sebastian Lim and Daniel Ro admitted to causing the Oct. 1 fire in Morton Hall in an online petition on the Care2 petition site. In the letter, titled “Change Our Lives,” Ro and Lim apologized for their actions and asked people to sign the petition in support as the two have been expelled from the College for posing “a threat to the community at large.”

All 67 students living in Morton Hall will be relocated to new rooms after a four-alarm fire broke out Saturday morning around midnight, said Mike Wooten, residential life director. East Wheelock assistant director Josiah Proietti, whose apartment is in the building, will also be relocated.

At The Dartmouth, we take our responsibilities to this community very seriously — responsibilities that extend both to our readers and our sources. I find it prudent at this time to restate some important policies of The Dartmouth that some members of the Dartmouth community have inquired about over the past few days.
In our offices, we hold the bound volumes of The Dartmouth going back to 1910. This institution was founded in 1799, making The Dartmouth the oldest college newspaper in the country. We have a long history and one that Rachel and I feel incredibly honored to be a part of as this year’s publisher and editor-in-chief.

Earlier in this term I gave a d’var — a speech interpreting the weekly Torah portion— at a Hillel Shabbat dinner. The portion started off in typically Biblical fashion with a detailed description of how the High Priest performs services on Yom Kippur. But then we got to the texts’ discussion of sexual morality and commandments that get at the social consciousness that I believe is at the core of Judaism. For me, this portion juxtaposes what attracts me to Judaism and what pulls me away from my Jewish heritage. The prohibitions, the you-shall-nots, the and-you-shall-be-stoned-if-you, et cetera have always seemed constrictive and often problematic. I do believe that we must follow certain moral codes and that religion can be useful in guiding us, but I still struggle with the text. Further, if I chose not to do so and engage with the text intellectually or not at all, how does that change my relationship to Judaism?
The National Association of Basketball Coaches included three Dartmouth students on its 2014-15 NABC Honors Court, announced at the end of July. Alex Mitola ’16, Connor Boehm ’16 and Gabas Maldunas ’15 met the requirement of earning a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average during the 2014-15 academic year. The NABC recognized Maldunas last year. The Dartmouth sat down with Maldunas to discuss balancing academics and athletics at Dartmouth.
My younger brother came to visit me this weekend. He mentioned to me how happy everyone seemed and how nice, how cool, how fun, how accomplished. Seeing Dartmouth through his eyes reminded me of my first impression of the College. I wanted to come here because everyone seemed so happy and because, frankly, alumni scared me with how much they seemed to love the College.
The Dartmouth sat down with Donald Claflin jewelry studio director Jeff Georgantes to talk about how the studio operates over the summer and what makes the space unique.
Next Tuesday, students and community members will get a taste of the eclectic offerings of the musical group “Pink Martini”. The group, founded by Thomas Lauderdale in 1994, is a self-described “little orchestra.” Classical, Latin, jazz and classical pop all influence the group’s work. The Dartmouth sat down with China Forbes, one of the band’s lead vocalists, to discuss her experience in the group.
“If you were a vegetable what would you be?” Anyone who auditioned for a cappella freshman fall — whether on a whim or as a diversion from an otherwise serious career — probably remembers answering some strange questions.
Last Sunday while looking for a spot on the Connecticut River to start a three-day flatwater kayaking trip, Kimberly Son ’17, her three trippees and co-leader found themselves accidentally trespassing on a private farm.
Freshman Year: 2011-2012
The 50.4 percent yield for the Class of 2019 reflects a “cautious” approach to admissions this year after the larger-than-expected Class of 2018, dean of admissions and financial aid Maria Laskaris said.
A petition calling for the resignation of Student Assembly president-elect Frank Cunningham ’16 following what it called “uncouth, unjustified” behavior at a student protest Saturday afternoon has garnered 359 signatures as of press time. Cunningham sent an email to campus Wednesday morning, in which he apologized and wrote that he “had no business approaching a female member of our community in that way” and acknowledged that his actions appeared “threatening.”
Ramtin Rahmani ’16 said he keeps thinking back to one anecdote submitted as part of the #DartmouthIamHere campaign — a new project using student submissions to showcase socioeconomic diversity on campus — where the student wrote about how at the end of each College tour he gives, he mentions that he is the first person from his family to attend college. This act, Ramtin noted, is this student’s way of expressing that there is diversity on campus.
At Fridays’s debate, Student Assembly presidential candidates Frank Cunningham ’16 and Jake Gaba ’16 and vice presidential candidates Julia Dressel ’17 and Penelope Williams ’16 discussed key points of their campaign platforms, their qualifications and issues ranging from diversity and inclusivity on campus to the role of Student Assembly.
