When I started writing this column, I swore to myself that I wouldn't fall into the same trap as some of the previous sports columnists for The Dartmouth who focused on random things jokes about 1990s sports movies and B-side analyses of pro sports. Unfortunately, I've spent the last two weeks devoting all of my free time to watching the Olympics and consequently can't think of anything else.

Jorge Rodriguez '12 put forward the argument in this space last week that Dartmouth students have an obligation to attend sporting events because doing so will help boost the Big Green to more wins. He based this on the energy he felt in the crowd at the Dartmouth versus Princeton hockey game on Jan. 30 ("Curious Jorge," Feb. 15).

My younger brother sent me a text message Friday afternoon that said, "Who sucks more? You guys or Penn?"

Talk of impending budget cuts is reaching a Super Bowl-like fever pitch heading into this weekend's Board of Trustees meeting, and the open letter to College President Jim Yong Kim and the Board, submitted this week by 75 professors, once again brought the athletic department to the forefront of the discussion ("Faculty protest layoffs in letter," Jan. 26).

What a basketball game that was on Saturday night. I really hope that what we saw there was a true sign of improvement for the Big Green and not just a result of the Crimson's abysmal shooting from three-point range 11.8 percent. Either way, Harvard beat the Big Green by 29 points two weeks earlier, so losing by just three points is a significant gain.

Wow, the stories and rumors surrounding men's basketball head coach Terry Dunn's Friday resignation are juicy. Nobody seems to be saying anything concrete about what really happened, but here's a rundown of some of the reports:

Those experiences have left me with thousands of memories of Big Green athletics, but few stick out as much as something former athletic director Josie Harper once told me in an interview: that Dartmouth's recent athletic facilities upgrades would help the College compete for, and win, some of the top recruits in the Ivy League ("Harper forsees breakout year for Dartmouth athletics," May 23, 2008).

But in a season where little has gone right for the Big Green, the misfortune continued, as Andy Shalbrack picked off Jenny's pass over the middle, securing a 21-13 victory for the Lions.

So that was 08X. Sure, there's one weekend left, and the last few days of classes, but it's pretty much over. Summer is so over that there isn't even going to be another issue of The Dartmouth Mirror to remind us that it's over. It's tough, I know.

My distaste for ESPN is well-documented in these pages. That position may preclude me from ever landing a six-figure salary in the world of sports journalism, but I am holding strong to it. One position I will flip-flop on, however, is my dislike for Justin Timberlake.

Ray Crosby is a familiar face behind the counter at Collis. He's been serving omlettes, stir fry, entrees and smoothies there for almost nine years now. What makes this guy tick? Read on to find out.

It's been a quiet week in the world of sports, and in the Hanover bubble.

Frequent late-night visitors to my Facebook profile were disappointed to learn last week that I am now listed as "In a relationship." The move comes at a time when many Dartmouth "dating scene" "experts" claim that campus, at the fabled crux of the "X-Curve," is supposed to explode with hook up potential. Yet, I have chosen to eschew this advice and take the opposite road: a sophomore summer relationship.

Athletes in some sports, notably baseball and men's hockey, do not traditionally attend the College during their sophomore summer. Many baseball players are currently playing in amateur leagues around the country, and some men's hockey players are training at places away from campus. Most Dartmouth athletes, though, will be on campus this term, hitting the gym and practice field to keep up their conditioning.

In an interview with The Dartmouth, Harper cited a great recruiting year in 2008, maturation of current Dartmouth student-athletes and key upgrades to athletic facilites as contributing factors that have strongly benefited the Big Green athletic program.

Closer Ryan Smith '11 and right-handed pitcher Chase Carpenter '08 rounded out the All-Ivy picks for the Big Green. Smith was named to the second team and Carpenter received honorable mention accolades.

The renovation, which has been in the works for several years, will convert the field from dirt and grass to a FieldTurf synthetic surface. The College also plans to construct new dugouts, stands, bullpens, fences and a press box behind home plate.

My mythical friend from home and I once had the idea of starting a new sports network that would directly challenge ESPN's dominance of the television sports media. We decided to call it "The No Previews No Combine Sports Network."

Columbia (20-24, 15-5 Ivy) erased a 5-3 Dartmouth (24-15, 15-5 Ivy) lead in the top of the sixth inning on a three-run home run by freshman Alex Ferrera, giving the Lions the lead for the remainder of the contest.
