When students want to listen to music or tune in to their favorite podcasts, they might first turn to streaming services like Apple Music or Spotify. But another option for Dartmouth students lies on the third floor of Robinson Hall — the Web Dartmouth College Radio station, a hidden gem from which students host radio talk shows and stream their curated playlists. According to the organization’s website, WebDCR is Dartmouth’s freeform, online and student-run radio station. The organization, which occupies a unique niche in Dartmouth’s media landscape, has undergone numerous changes throughout its history — most notably, the College sold its FM station to WFRD, a commercial radio station in Hanover, in 2021. Since then, WebDCR transitioned to exclusively online broadcasting.

I recently read something that made me pause. It said that while our parents leave our lives too early and our children enter too late, it is our siblings that are with us all along. If only that were entirely true. The 14 years I spent with my little sister at home feel all too few now that I am far away from there.

I haven’t missed a daily dip all summer; it’s become the perfect tradition. With the sweltering heat and a room that is barely air conditioned, I’ve found it necessary to cool off with a nice plunge into the Connecticut River.

It is no secret that OpenAI’s artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, is transforming the academic landscape — especially due to its applications in coding and writing. Only a few months after its release, ChatGPT’s usage has become widespread, and Dartmouth professors are feeling the pressure to make a decision on the new technology’s role in the classroom.

On the first Monday in May, the two of us sat on a couch in Hanover and watched celebrities arrive on the red carpet at the Met Gala, an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, in New York City.

Formed more than sixty years ago by the College, the Dartmouth Ski Patrol is a community organization for students interested in ensuring the safety of those on the Dartmouth Skiway. Every winter, these students, who are trained in various forms of emergency medicine, each patrol the mountain for about 10 hours a week, according to patroller Kiki Levy ’24. For many Dartmouth students, joining Ski Patrol (SkiPa) is the natural next step of years spent skiing at home.

There’s nothing more rejuvenating than returning to my home state of Florida after braving a frigid New Hampshire winter. I often joke with my friends that the moment I return my skin suddenly tans, my back un-hunches and the persistent cough that had plagued me since week six of the last term spontaneously disappears. Basking in the Floridian sunshine over spring break is the cure to all the ills that Hanover winter brings.

The Class of 2023 hasn’t exactly had it easy — the COVID-19 pandemic radically impacted their first-year spring, and since then, their college careers have been anything but typical. Following the trials they’ve faced, the ’23s shared how they plan to make the most of their final term at Dartmouth.

It’s no secret that queer students aren’t exactly a majority here at Dartmouth, and the icy climes of Hanover aren’t exactly a hotspot for the gay community. With such a small group compared to the College population at large, it can be tough for these students to find community — and to form the relationships that are significantly easier for their straight counterparts.

When our alarms go off in the morning, we drag ourselves out of bed, mentally cursing every extra minute that we stayed up the night before. With late-night homework, the temptation to go out and the ever-earlier wakeup times for class and cramming in the morning, our precious sleep hours are the last priority, the first thing sacrificed to shove something else into our schedule.

Homecoming — a time of tradition, community and festivity at Dartmouth. Each year, the celebration marks the end of a quintessential New England autumn. As the leaves change, students venture off campus — hiking Gile Mountain or gathering fruit at Riverview Farm — while alumni return to relive and reminisce on their own falls at the College.

It’s no secret that Hanover is an odd duck compared to the Upper Valley at large. All it takes is a ten-minute drive in any direction to notice some differences between the sprawling mansions on Occom Pond and the isolated strip malls of surrounding towns.

Most kids start their career aspirations imaginatively: They dream of being an astronaut, or of starring in a blockbuster movie when they grow up. Jake Lotreck ’25, however, had a different dream from the start. Exposed to finance from an early age, he always wanted to be an actuary.
