The Hanover Co-op Food Store was recently the site of an impromptu demonstration, protesting the arrest of Dartmouth French professor Vivian Kogan, who was charged with shoplifting last February. Martha Luehrmann Tu'77, a former Upper Valley resident and a friend of Kogan, was arrested on charges of criminal trespassing after picketing in front of the Co-op on June 14.

The Green Key Society extended an open invitation to the Class of 2009 for its winter social Monday evening at the home of acting Dean of the College Dan Nelson '75. Approximately 20 sophomores attended the event, which was intended to educate rising juniors about how to become involved in Green Key and how membership serves the College.

The shift away from on-campus interviewing has occurred at all Ivy League schools save Yale University. The 2007 Social Justice Awards Ceremony, organized by the Martin Luther King Celebration Committee, took place in Collis Common Ground on Friday. Four alumni received awards at the ceremony. Thomas W. Wahman '60, the founder and president of the internationally oriented Resources Development Foundation, was one award recipient. Karen Kramer Hein DMS'68 received an award for her role as former president of the William T. Grant Foundation and founder of the United States's first adolescent HIV/AIDS program. Jim Butterworth Tu'91, founder of Incite Productions and producer and director of the film Seoul Train, and Paul D. Holzer '00,director of Higher Education at the Latin American Youth Center in Washington, D.C., also received awards. The Summer Enrichment at Dartmouth program and the Mascoma Clinic were also recognized at the event.

The search committee charged with finding a successor to Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Karl Furstenberg has recently begun to solicit applications for the position. In the wake of the departure of a handful of other top administrators, Furstenberg announced his retirement in late September, with plans to conclude his 17th year at the College in July.

Following a fall season marked by nationwide controversy over early admissions programs, Dartmouth admitted approximately 30 percent of its early decision applicants, filling one-third of the Class of 2011. Application numbers decreased by approximately 2 percent from 1,317 to 1,287 early applicants, a normal rate of fluctuation according to Dean of Admissions and Financial Karl Furstenberg. The number of students admitted decreased by less than one percent.
