The men's and women's swimming and diving squads competed in a series of heated meets this weekend. The men narrowly dropped their Friday contest to Colgate by a score of 126.5 to 114.5, before being trounced on Saturday by Ivy League counterparts Cornell and Harvard, 231 to 62 and 230 to 65, respectively. The women, however, put on a strong showing as they split results with a pair of conference foes.

Despite tough competition, the lightweight team managed to get three of four teams into the grand finals -- a feat that Dartmouth lightweight coach Steve Perry said the team has not accomplished in several years. However, the heavyweight team failed to put a boat in the final despite a solid effort.

The Dartmouth women put up a dominating performance on Saturday against Cornell, sweeping the races of the day. The good times continued after the boats crossed the finish line, as the team celebrated the 30 years of women's crew at Dartmouth with a banquet. The team also christened a new boat, the "Fast Eddie." Donated by Nancy Vespoli '77, the boat was named after Vespoli's father, Eddie. Afterwards, a celebration banquet was held to honor the 30 years of women's crew at Dartmouth.

The Big Red led by as many as 13 points late in the second half, but Dartmouth refused to let its seniors leave without a fight. Launching an emotional comeback, the Big Green held Cornell scoreless for the next 5:30. With just 2:18 left in the contest, Leon Pattman '07 hit one of two free throws to bring the score to 56-55.

Dartmouth's men's basketball team (5-18, Ivy 3-7) had not scored two consecutive victories this season, but that all changed this weekend during a thrilling two game homestand. Dartmouth first downed Yale (13-11, Ivy 5-4) with a 72-64 and then took out Brown (8-15, Ivy 4-6) 58-46.

In the Princeton game, Dartmouth was down 46-40 with just 2:47 left in the game when forward Johnathan Ball '08 went to the line and sunk a free throw. Forward Chuck Flynn '08 drained two more from the charity stripe soon after and narrowed the deficit to three, 46-43.

With a 78-68 victory against the Columbia Lions (8-11, 1-5 Ivy) on Saturday evening, Dartmouth men's basketball closed out a brutal five-game road trip with its first Ivy League win. The Big Green (3-16, 1-5 Ivy) delivered the much-needed triumph after falling to the Cornell Big Red (8-11, 3-2) the previous evening in Ithaca 63-47.

Dartmouth (2-15, 0-4) resumed Ivy League basketball this weekend with a pair of games on the road. On Friday, the Big Green traveled to Providence and faced Brown (6-10, 2-1), where they lost a double-overtime nailbiter 73-70. The team then tried to turn things around on Saturday, but was defeated by Yale in a 72-55 contest.

The clincher in the intrastate battle was UNH's ability to hit big three-point shots and go on offensive tears. In all, the Wildcats managed to drain 12 three-pointers during the night.
