Work hard, play hard." It's the college mantra of which we're all so proud. It's what we say to lure in undecided prospectives, it's what we tell potential employers to justify our absence from the upper Ivies, and its how we redeem our No. 15 spot in the U.S. News and World Report college rankings. Other schools might possess a larger endowment or boast a more star-studded faculty, but Dartmouth students take pride in attending a school that attracts and creates thoroughly balanced, well-rounded, little Renaissance men and women.

In translating any foreign piece of work the potential conflict always lies in attempting to translate as close to the text as possible without extracting the art from the art form. In "Medea," a Greek tragedy written by Euripides in the 5th century, this conflict is magnified; not only was "Medea" written in a foreign language, it was written for a culture quite different from our own.

Ever since its inception in 1910, Dartmouth's Winter Carnival has been more than just a celebration of the winter season and the sports for which Dartmouth is famous. Carnival is a time when students and alumni alike revel in the tradition and spirit of camaraderie that distinguishes this campus from all others.

About 21 years ago, The Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble, under the directorship of Don Glasgo, began its tradition of honoring the graduating seniors in its annual Spring Concert. This Saturday evening at 8 p.m. in Spaulding Auditorium, this tradition will continue as Jason Dominy '97, Alan Grubner '98, Tony Jurado '98, Sarah Snyder '98 and Onche Ugbabe '98 perform as featured soloists.

Ask anyone who knows Joanna Gibson '98 to tell you what kind of person she is, and they will inevitably comment on her contagious laughter and sense of humor. Like her laughter, Joanna's excitement with music is contagious and has rubbed off on those around her.

In keeping with the 1920s-themed Carnival, the Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble will be having a concert in Spaulding Auditorium this Saturday at 8 p.m. This term, the ensemble will be aided by famed saxophonist, composer and poet Oliver Lake.
