I was at a party a few nights ago with a lot of seniors, and one of my friends cruelly popped in the "St. Elmo's Fire" soundtrack, rendering many of us in the room emotional wrecks. "You can't play 'St. Elmo's Fire' during Senior Week!" one of us protested, in vain of course. Comments like these are typical as Senior Spring draws to a close and Commencement Day approaches. Because, today is the day that none of us wants to arrive. For all our griping about the lack of social options in Hanover, or about the absurdity of the $15 Dartalk monthly fee, Dartmouth seniors want to stay Dartmouth seniors, if only for another term, another week, even another day.

I was a bit puzzled by Dave Gacioch's column, "Thoughts on Objectivity," in yesterday's issue of The Dartmouth, in which he charged this newspaper with disseminating false information and whoring the First Amendment to further its own agenda.

As I walked into Spaulding Auditorium yesterday for the live closed-circuit announcement of the next president of the College, I was thinking that Bill Bradley or Robert Reich would be nice choices, but that James Wright would be the logical choice. And that's exactly what Wright's election to the Dartmouth presidency is -- a logical, conservative choice that marks an important first step toward restoring some stability to the Dartmouth administration.

Well, it was announced yesterday that historian Doris Kearns Goodwin will be the Commencement speaker for the Class of 1998 this June, and let me be the first senior to say the following: Who cares? Yes, it must be very distressing to many of us seniors that for the second straight year we failed to secure a "celebrity speaker" (Weren't you wowed by Finnish Prime Minister Paavo T. Lipponen last year? Didn't think so). But in the grand scheme of things, the Commencement speaker isn't all that an important part of the graduation ceremonies.

After 27 games and almost five months of hockey, the Dartmouth men's hockey team's season comes down to the final two regular season games this weekend, tonight against Brown and tomorrow night against Harvard at Thompson Arena.

Since the beginning of the season, Head Coach Bob Gaudet and his Dartmouth men's hockey team have said their goal is to reach the ECAC playoffs. This weekend, as the Big Green hit the road for contests against Yale tonight and Princeton tomorrow night, the team can just about sew up that coveted playoff spot with a productive two games.

While most Dartmouth students will be in the midst of admiring the snow sculpture, dancing at the Swing Ball and partying hard all over campus, the Big Green men's hockey team will continue their quest for the playoffs with two tough road tilts this weekend.

The Dartmouth men's hockey team has played well this season -- in fact, very well at times -- but because of a string of recent one-goal losses, the Big Green are not as high in the ECAC standings as they should be.

LOWELL, Mass., Jan. 27 -- It was a night of milestones for the Dartmouth men's hockey team tonight, as the Big Green came into the brand-new Paul E. Tsongas Arena and beat the host UMass-Lowell River Hawks 2-1 in overtime in the first-ever hockey game played in the building.

If ever there were a game that had the potential to energize a team and start them on a roll, the Dartmouth men's hockey team's win over Yale on Sunday would certainly qualify.

The Dartmouth men's hockey team returns to action this weekend looking to pick up some points in the ECAC against conference foes Princeton and Yale. It's still early in the season, but as the weather gets colder and the snow starts to fall, picking up points in these conference matchups will be crucial to the Green's playoff hopes.

The Dartmouth men's hockey team heads into this weekend's ECAC contents with RPI and Union coming off an impressive 7-1 win over Army last weekend, but the squad knows it has its work cut out for it if it is to improve from the dismal 1996-97 season -- in which the Big Green won just three games in January and February.

As James Oliver Freedman humbly accepted the original copy of the College Charter -- and with it, the presidency of Dartmouth College -- on July 19, 1987 in front of thousands on Baker Lawn, the College was in the midst of what some would call a "malaise."

If you happen to cross the Green late at night during your first few weeks at Dartmouth, many of the lights on campus will be out, and a majority of students will probably be asleep.

As far as romantic comedies go, one of the strongest movies of this decade was "Pretty Woman," which in 1990 catapulted Julia Roberts into the forefront of A-list actresses.

Despite being the head of state of a country thousands of miles away, this year's Commencement speaker has always held Dartmouth close to his heart.
