Tonight is one of milestones. The end of a truly terrifying and wild election, a very lit issue and the closure of Hayley-the-jaded-senior’s™ reign as Mirror editor. “Co-editor,” Lauren corrected. If Hayley is currently trying to fight back nostalgia for her favorite extra-curricular and all the late nights laughing at memes with the sassy but beloved Lauren, this issue is her knight in shining armor. Sorry, Hillary. Hayley has been looking forward to this issue, which is themed around beauty, since she was a young, bright eyed, bushy tailed junior, when she dreamed of facilitating deep discussions among writers and members of the Dartmouth community. We sent out a campus survey asking people to submit the most beautiful people they know, with an emphasis on inner beauty. We received answers in which people wrote heartfelt descriptions of some of the most important people they knew. Some wrote about life-changing professors, while some listed less serious responses, including Harambe and “ur mom lol.” We picked the people who seemed to have the most soul power, then we instructed our writers to take them on dates. They got to know them and found out what makes them tick. The result? Storybook beautiful. Dartmouth might not be perfect, but we’re lucky that there are a lot of beautiful people to love here, and if we’re luckier, to love us back.

We picked this week’s theme, hyped up on the excitement of the best holiday, Halloween, but more honestly, our shared enthusiasm for candy corn. As Hayley writes this sentence while eating a bag of some from CVS that she found on a random table, she is wondering if corn farmers ever eat candy corn, and, equally pressing, why all farmers’ tops aren’t crop tops. Unfortunately, it seems as though everyone else has already moved on from Halloween, which seems to have come and gone too quickly (RIP). While we may not have Halloween for another year, we are still left with its most central ingredient: fear. From failing a class that was supposed to be a layup to getting hit by an overenthusiastic biker on the Green, the potential for disaster is never far at Dartmouth. With homecoming behind us and finals looming near, it seemed only appropriate that the theme of this week’s issue be fear. From the irrational, such as Lauren’s fear of bees and Hayley’s fear of not getting on table (just kidding, relax), to the more serious, such as Hayley’s fear of getting hit by a car and Lauren’s fear of a Donald Trump presidency, we wanted to look into what really keeps students at the College up at night. Some seek out fear, some are held back by it and some don’t experience it at all. Happy reading!

When the editors first suggested “sex” as a theme, it was mostly because both had run dry of deep, profound theme ideas. After throwing around increasingly silly article ideas varying in seriousness (one potential survey question simply read, “Anal?”), however, Lauren and Hayley found that there is a lot to explore when it comes to the sex lives of Dartmouth students.

The leaves are changing, the weather is cold, the coffee in my dorm is 48 hours old. Happy week five. But enough with the moving poetry, or as Lauren maybe more aptly described it, “shoddy rhyme scheme.” In her defense, Hayley briefly considered Googling what couplets are. But, remembering who she is as a person and that she is sleep deprived, Hayley thought to herself, “Who cares.” While the first five sentences of our editors’ note seem to be trying to aggressively prove otherwise, at Dartmouth we have a lot of very talented and driven women.

Everyone is trying to escape from something. For Lauren, it’s the boredom of her 9L, in which she finds mental respite in daydreams only to be horrified when she checks the clock and 20 minutes have passed with zero knowledge gained. Hayley responded by saying that she’s disappointed that she doesn’t have any more off-terms to use to escape her real-world problems. Apparently, you are not truly a member of this mythical Real World so long as you are enrolled at the College.

Settling upon “Dreams” for this week’s theme proved a mistake for Hayley, as it only inspired Lauren to discuss, at length, her disgusting recurring dreams about her teeth becoming injured or falling out, even after Hayley pointedly remarked that she doesn’t think anyone really cares about anyone else’s dreams.

Please forgive us for using a Ralph Waldo Emerson quotation (we know how annoying that is), but it had us thinking this week — “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” We like this quote because if this is, in fact, glory, then our survival this past week in spite of some rather pathetic shortcomings means that we have achieved greatness. Hayley lost her ID this week, and Lauren broke her phone, eliminating the possibility of meeting our needs for two of Dartmouth’s most important essentials: eating at dining halls and pretending to be busy on our phones to avoid awkward conversations. Contemplating our own mediocrity, we decided to make this issue about glory — what it means, who has it, who doesn’t and how close we come to achieving it. Enjoy!

After a zillion existential crises, Hayley has finally reached senior year of college, which she feels is her last chance at getting her life together and figuring out who she is before she emerges into #reallife.

Before I was called into sociology professor Janice McCabe’s airy office for our interview, I thought she was talking with a student. I was surprised to find that the voice I had heard was coming from her computer. She was listening to a voice recording from an interview with a Dartmouth student talking about friendship — the subject of McCabe’s forthcoming and first book, “Connecting in College: How Friendship Networks Matter for Academic and Social Success,” which will be published this year. McCabe has been collecting information about how Dartmouth students make friends. I was curious how this book and her previous article, “Friendship Talk as Identity Work: Defining the Self through Friend Relationships,” shed light on how people grapple with their individuality while making friends.

Happy week nine, Mirror readers! Hayley and Caroline can hardly believe that this is the last editor’s note they will pen together, as Caroline will be abroad in London in the fall. Where has the time gone?
(05/10/16 9:01pm)
Happy week seven, Mirror readers. We hope you’ve recovered from your weekends dressing up in pastels, eating pig and frolicking in the mud. Perhaps the mother who Caroline heard exclaim to her son, “Honey, no offense, but Dartmouth students are SO weird!” was right after all.
(05/03/16 9:01pm)
Happy week six, Mirror readers and happy May! It’s practically impossible to believe that 2016 is already one third over. Where has the time gone? More importantly, how has Caroline already given up on all 17 of her New Year’s resolutions?

Happy Wednesday, Mirror readers. Looking out at the falling snow as we pen this editor’s note, it’s hard to believe that we’re approaching the halfway point of the spring term. We can only hope for a snowless May, but at this point jinxing Mother Nature seems dangerous — next thing we know it’ll be snowing during Green Key. Dartmouth students would never get over such a travesty.

Happy April 20, Mirror readers. Just a reminder to be wary of any brownies you’re offered today, unless they’re free samples at KAF — in that case, fight tooth and nail to get one.
(04/12/16 9:01pm)
Hello, Mirror readers, and happy week three. Now that the weather has finally reached (slightly) above freezing temperatures it’s easier to believe that we’re already one fourth of the way into the spring term.
(04/05/16 9:21pm)
Happy Wednesday, Mirror readers. We hope you are handling the abrupt change in weather better than your Mirror editors are. “It will stop snowing eventually, right?” Hayley asks Caroline in a defeated voice, thinking longingly of sunny days in Hanover.
(03/28/16 10:30pm)
Happy spring term, Mirror readers! We hope you had wonderful and relaxing spring breaks, and that you didn’t miss us too much. If so, rest assured, we have an entire term ahead of us to satiate you with Mirror issues.
(03/04/16 12:15am)
Happy Friday, Mirror readers! We can’t believe it’s already the last Mirror of the term, or that it’s March or that the winter just passed us by without really being, well, a winter.
(02/26/16 12:29am)
What a beautiful place campus is during week eight, as downtrodden students trudge through the muddy Green amid pouring rain. With Winter Carnival a distant memory, the snow sculpture a melted puddle and no indication of the cozy, wintry wonderland this term promised to be, it seems like there isn’t much to be happy about. To quote Hayley’s favorite, somewhat ironic expression of Caroline’s: “What a time to be alive.”
(02/19/16 12:43am)
Hello, Mirror readers! We hope that you’ve recovered from the festivities of Winter Carnival and/or Valentine’s Day and are staying afloat at this busy time of term. At the very least we hope that, unlike Caroline, you did not wipe out on the ice as you were hurrying to class.
