The Asian/Asian-American Exploration Group, an organization formed to encourage open discussion about what it means to be Asian or Asian-American on campus, will resume with weekly discussions starting next term. The group, created and facilitated by Dick’s House counselors Da-Shih Hu and Sarah Chung, has operated in two previous terms and is open to self-identifying Asian and Asian-American undergraduate and graduate students.

The Dartmouth Public Voices Fellowship, an initiative that partners Dartmouth faculty with OpEd Project journalists to increase the quality of professor’s engagement with major media outlets, has been extended for a third year. The fellowship will offer approximately 20 faculty members participation in seminars run by the OpEd project — a social venture dedicated to increasing the range of voices represented in national media — in addition to year-long coaching and mentorship, according to the project’s application.

The Society of Fellows selection committee has identified the top 15 postdoctoral candidates from a pool of 1,740 applications. This program, first announced by College President Phil Hanlon in his inaugural address, is dedicated to bringing postdoctoral students to the College for research, teaching and mentorship and will commence in the fall, likely with five post-doctoral fellows.

The faculty task force devoted to creating an administratively independent graduate school for advanced studies at the College has begun to focus on primary areas for the proposal and plans to submit a final proposal to Provost Carolyn Dever by the beginning of spring term, dean of graduate studies and task force chair Jon Kull said.

Provost Carolyn Dever is pushing for faculty members across disciplines to send in a second round of proposals for the College’s Cluster Initiative — a program allowing faculty to form groups with the aim of solving complex issues of global importance. Dever sent out her request last Thursday, and proposals are due on Feb. 16.

For the past week, Dartmouth and Stanford University have been embroiled in controversy over a research project that has potentially affected Montana’s upcoming Supreme Court elections by implying the nonpartisan candidates had party affiliations. Last week, Montana Secretary of State Linda McCulloch filed a complaint, as an individual, against the project’s three researchers — Dartmouth government professor Kyle Dropp and Stanford professors Adam Bonica and Jonathan Rodden— for interfering with the election and improperly using Montana’s state seal.

Amid national discussion about the lack of job prospects for newly minted Ph.D.’s, just four out of the 95 students who received Dartmouth Ph.D.’s in June still seek employment. Dean of graduate studies Jon Kull wrote in an email that it is not too difficult for Dartmouth Ph.D. recipients to find positions, particularly because Dartmouth only offers science doctorates.

After posting a $5.5 million deficit for the 2014 fiscal year, the Geisel Medical School must make $10 million in budget cuts, including layoffs and restructuring. Students and professors interviewed pointed to a lack of transparency about Geisel’s expenses and said they would like to be part of conversations about implementing cuts.

In a five-part series of health care forums that ended yesterday morning, host and executive vice president Richard Mills sparked discussion among faculty and staff regarding changes to this year’s health care plans, before open enrollment begins on Oct. 21. The sessions, attended by around 450, explored factors driving changes in health coverage, including College President Phil Hanlon’s stated desire to address college affordability and a new tax under the Affordable Care Act.

The College endowment earned an investment return of 19.2 percent for the 2014 fiscal year, its highest growth since the recession. As of June 30, the endowment amounted to $4.5 billion, reflecting a growth of $735 million since the last fiscal year.
