When the Class of 2018 arrived on campus in September, they brought with them a penchant for a new social media platform, a location-based forum known as Yik Yak. The app allows users to submit anonymous posts, or “yaks,” that can be seen, replied to and voted up or down by nearby users.

The Neukom Digital Arts Leadership and Innovation Lab — stylized as the DALI lab, its logo complete with the artist’s iconic twirled moustache — has met its capacity of students and projects 18 months after it opened its doors. After a record number of students applied this term, the lab ultimately accepted about 20 percent of applicants.

A full house of students, alumni, professors and community members packed into the Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network’s Innovation Center and New Venture Incubator Wednesday night for the space’s grand opening. LED lights, which are usually set to Dartmouth green, pulsed different colors as a DJ played high-energy music and guests milled about.

Free-hanging extension cords, industrial concrete floors and a fully stocked fridge welcome visitors to the Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network’s Innovation Center and New Venture Incubator at 4 Currier Place, one of three major construction projects finished in time to open this term. Other projects are the Triangle House, an LGBTQ affinity house, and Kappa Delta sorority’s new physical plant.

Without planning, New Jersey neighbors Maddie Gilfert ’18 and Tiffany Zhai ’18 arrived at Dartmouth with the same desk lamp and nearly identical sets of blue, yellow, white and gray bedding. Friends since third grade, the two were one of the first pairs to request roommates this fall, under a new housing policy that allows incoming students to choose who they live with.

As soon as this fall, residential buildings at the College may gain gender-inclusive restrooms, starting in Topliff Hall, vice president of campus planning and facilities Lisa Hogarty said. The bathrooms labeled gender-inclusive are open to any person, regardless of gender identity, she said.

Improve Dartmouth, the website on which community members can post suggestions for campus change, reached its six-month anniversary on Wednesday. During the first six months, administrators have implemented 18 ideas on the site, with eight listed as “in progress” and 13 designated as “in review.” Since the site’s opening, 5,006 unique users have contributed 434 ideas, 940 comments and about 46,000 votes.

The Class of 2014’s four years at the College were characterized by administrative turnover, campus renovations, student activism and rising concerns surrounding the role of Greek life, with these issues particularly prevalent during the 2013-14 academic year.

As part of an ongoing series of renovations, the College is considering updating or rebuilding the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge to better meet safety codes and host a growing number of guests. This June, the Class of 1974 Bunkhouse — affectionately dubbed by some the “’74tress” — will become the newest building dotting the woods surrounding the Lodge, the latest in five years of bunkhouse renovation and construction.

Data analysis conducted by The Dartmouth showed a higher mean number of sexual assaults reported at the College than at its peer institutions, coupled with a 99.4 percent confidence that the gap between Dartmouth and similar colleges did not occur by chance.
