The New York Theatre Workshop will bring the East Village to Hanover for the 14th consecutive year this month, showcasing six works-in-progress at the Hopkins Center. The workshop will present six plays in various stages of development at the Bentley Theater.

Standup comedian Bill Santiago performed his set, "Spanglish 101," to a full house in Bentley Theater on Tuesday night. The set showcased the "Spanglish" language and the Latino-American culture at large. Despite his wry underdog humor, Santiago was carefully good-natured and tasteful. He pulled off irreverence without being abrasive -- a rarity in standup comedy.

In the late 1990s, the new South African government set up the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in order to reveal what actually happened under the former apartheid regime. To that end, the Committee on Amnesty was formed to allow those who committed atrocities for "political reasons" to come forward and explain their crimes in exchange for amnesty, and at these committee meetings, victims were allowed to confront their tormentors face to face.

James O. Freedman, Dartmouth president from 1987 to 1998, will be honored by Tufts University this May for his contributions to education, including his defense of the liberal arts education. Tufts' president and the Tufts Board of Trustees agreed in a majority vote to award Freedman an honorary doctorate of humane letters at Tufts' commencement.

Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business chose last week not to follow Harvard Business School's lead in automatically denying admission to applicants accused of hacking into an admissions processing website to learn the decision on their applications early, Tuck Dean Paul Danos said in a press release.

Dartmouth smokers will soon be forced to stop lighting up in their dorm rooms as the College's last smoking residence halls -- Lord, Richardson, Wheeler and South Massachusetts -- will all become smoke-free by fall 2006, according to Dean of Residential Life Martin Redman.
