Ian Kelsey ’18, captain of the men’s golf team and one of two seniors on the team, has helped lead a surging Big Green golf team as they look ahead to the upcoming Ivy League Championship in late April. The tournament will be held at Stonewall Orchard, a course just outside of Philadelphia. He claimed his first collegiate title this past weekend at the Cornell Spring Invitational in Florida; it was the first tournament win by a Big Green golfer in nearly two years. Previously, Kelsey has been named First Team All-Ivy and finished second at the Ivy League Championship as a sophomore. He is pursuing an economic major at the College.

The Final Four is here, and since I’m firmly out of the running for the top spot in my bracket pool after Duke lost last weekend, I was able to enjoy the games more fully and without bias as a neutral fan.

As the team reaches the midpoint of the season, it is ranked 19th in the nation — the first time it has been within the top 20 since 2013 — and is recently coming off of two big wins against Ivy League rivals Princeton University and Harvard University.

Dartmouth football improved in the 2017-2018 season, going overall 8-2 and 5-2 in Ivy League play under the direction of quarterback and tri-captain Jack Heneghan ’18. Though the Big Green struggled in its previous season with an overall record of 4-6 and a last place finish in the League, Heneghan entered this season needing 10 passing yards to move into Dartmouth’s top 10 all-time quarterbacks and 236 yards short of becoming the ninth quarterback in Big Green history with 3,000 career passing yards.

Ellie Carson ’20 has catalyzed the Dartmouth Women’s Lacrosse attack this season, leading the Big Green to a 6-1 record and a No. 19 placement in the Division I NCAA rankings. After starting only six games last year as a first-year, Carson has already surpassed that total this season, starting all seven games and scoring a team-leading 31 points.

The trophy case in Robinson Hall might need a new shelf following Dartmouth’s return from the 2018 NCAA skiing championships in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The team won four individual titles and took third place overall, tied with 2011 for the program’s best finish since its 2007 national championship win.

On March 18, 1995, Michael Jordan announced he was returning to basketball after spending the previous year and a half swinging a baseball bat. The return was big — billion dollars on an elevator big; two mixtapes in six months big — and announced with just two words on a fax: “I’m back.” Jordan went on to drop 19 points, six rebounds and six assists the next day against the Indiana Pacers.

After graduating a record eight seniors last year, the women’s volleyball program appeared to be in a rebuilding year for the 2017-18 season. However, co-captain Sara Lindquist’s ’18 selflessness in her court positions and leadership has been an asset to the team. Going into this season, all eyes were on the two seniors, Lindquist and Morgan Dressel ’18, as well as co-captains Zoe Leonard ’19 and Maddy Schoenberger ’20, to see how the team would respond to the transition, as the team added six first-years and one sophomore transfer to an already young returning roster.

Before this NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, 1-seeds were 132-0 against 16-seeds, those teams’ first round opponents. Only 16 of those 132 wins were by single digits, and only seven of those wins happened in the past 27 years.

This past weekend, the men’s hockey team played in its first playoff series of the postseason against St. Lawrence University, winning 2-1. Dartmouth was the highest seed in the Eastern College Athletic Conference that did not receive a bye, so the men played the last-ranked Saints in the first round. Dartmouth swept the regular season series against the Saints, winning the first game 3-2 and the second 3-1. The Big Green looked poised to make a run in this year’s ECAC tournament, but St. Lawrence proved to be a team that should not be overlooked.
