Something wicked inspires at WiRED

“Evil is not born, it’s made.” This prompt inspired three pairs of writer-directors participating in this term’s WiRED, a 24-hour playwriting experience sponsored by the theater department and the Displaced Theater Company. The process began at 8 p.m. on Friday when writer-directors, managers and actors met to play icebreaker games. The event culminated in a 45-minute production of three plays in the Bentley Theater on Saturday.

McFerrin to perform ‘spirityouall’ songs

Famous for his 1988 Billboard chart-topper, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” Bobby McFerrin has had an accomplished career as a vocalist and conductor, winning 10 Grammy Awards. On Saturday, McFerrin comes to Dartmouth to perform a sold-out evening show in the Hopkins Center’s Spaulding Auditorium.

Galván to showcase flamenco with a twist

When Hopkins Center programming director Margaret Lawrence first saw flamenco dancer Israel Galván perform at a festival in Montreal, she was enthralled by his mastery of movement. Lawrence immediately knew that she wanted to bring him to Dartmouth, especially to perform his popular solo piece, “La Edad de Oro,” onstage at the Hop.

Brown to host annual Ivy Film Festival

Hoping to send its final products to the Ivy Film Festival in April, the Stories Growing Films production group has been producing short films each term since last summer. The Ivy Film Festival, the largest student-run film festival in the world, offers a venue for student writers, directors and filmmakers to exhibit work, and Dartmouth students are seizing the opportunity. Hugh Sagona ’15, the president of Stories Growing Films, said he is excited about an upcoming film he’s directing, tentatively called “Million Dollar Crazy,” which will be finished by the end of spring.

Glee Club show features Spanish songs

The Dartmouth Glee Club is full of accomplished classical and choral singers who are more than ready for a challenge — even singing in a foreign language and mastering new rhythmic patterns. For Saturday’s “From Spain to the Americas” concert, the group’s members will perform songs from Spain and Latin America in Spanish.

Behind the Curtain: ORL Art Acquisition Program

For the first half of freshman year, Tyler Rivera ’16 refused to work in French Hall’s study room. Not only was it a tiny, humid alcove squeezed next to the laundry room in a dormitory basement, but its walls were bland. When he walked by the room in the spring, however, it had gone through a transformation. Three large student paintings adorned the walls, artwork which brightened up the study space and “made it feel homely,” Rivera said. For the first time, Rivera felt invited to study. The artwork was installed by the Office of Residential Life, which has worked with the Class of 1960 since 1991 to purchase art from graduating studio art majors, rejuvenating study rooms and living areas. The program installed 19 pieces around campus in 2013.
