Looking at the résumé of Dartmouth women’s rugby’s team, it is hard to believe the team has only been a varsity program for four years. This year, the team has a national championship, five First Team All Americans, a Fulbright Scholar and now, one winner of the MA Sorensen Award. Emily Henrich ’22 became the first Dartmouth rugby player to receive the MA Sorensen Award. Presented by the Washington Athletic Club in Seattle, the award is given annually to the top women’s rugby player in the country. Kat Ramage ’19 was also nominated for the award.

After a lengthy legal battle that went all the way to the New Hampshire Supreme Court, contractors finally began construction on a new indoor practice facility on campus this past winter. The new facility will provide space to Dartmouth sports teams — varsity and club — that have struggled with cancelled practices, icy New Hampshire winters and a lack of sufficient accommodations at the sole indoor practice facility currently on campus, Leverone Field House.

We are still several months away from Sept. 21, when the Dartmouth football team will travel to Florida for its first game of the season at Jacksonville University. Dartmouth offers its athletes the opportunity to play at a competitive NCAA level while engaging them in an academic community as rigorous as it is rewarding. Last week, a large number of Dartmouth’s athletic teams won Academic Progress Rate Public Recognition Awards — honors bestowed upon teams who land in the top 10 percent of APR’s scoring. APR rewards teams for maintaining high rates of “academic eligibility” and “retention” among their players. With 18 Big Green teams earning this award, Dartmouth tied Brown University, Columbia University and the College of the Holy Cross for the most teams honored.

Per the old adage, baseball is a game of inches, and Dartmouth learned this lesson the hard way in its final week of competition. The Big Green lost three nail-biters, falling to the University of Maine 8-7 on Wednesday and losing to Cornell University 2-1 and 8-6 on Saturday. But the team rebounded to end its season on Sunday, winning 6-1 to give 30-year veteran head coach Bob Whalen his 600th career win.

With a national championship win this fall, the Dartmouth women’s rugby team secured its spot as a powerhouse in the sport. However, many forget that there is a men’s team that competes at a high level year-round. The Dartmouth Men’s Rugby Football Club, although not an official varsity sport like the women’s team, has a legacy of success in the Ivy League and across the nation. With 23 Ivy League cup championships over 47 years, seven straight Ivy League Sevens championships since 2012, two USA Sevens Collegiate Rugby championships in 2011 and 2012, five National XV Final Fours, two National XV Championship Runner-Ups and one D1AA XV Championship Runner-Up finish, it is undeniable that the DRFC has been able to sustain success over time.

Cross country skier Kikkan Randall started down the path to the Olympics when she was still in high school — a path that led her, along with teammate Jessie Diggins, to become the first American women to win a medal in cross country skiing when they took gold in the team sprint in 2018. The payoff is spectacular, but such a path requires high-performing athletes to make sacrifices.

Arguably the most overused phrase in sports is taking the season one game at a time. But as the baseball team enters its last two weeks of Ivy League play, it is going to need to stick to this cliché in order to have any chance of reaching the Ivy League championship in spite of its current sixth-place standing.
