This past weekend, red, yellow, pink, green, blue and purple lights illuminated the front of Dartmouth Hall in honor of PRIDE 2016. The 10th annual PRIDE week will celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community, and for the first time, will last two weeks instead of one.

The armed forces can often seem like a far removed subject from the lives of most — especially for college students living in isolated Hanover. For the students enrolled in Dartmouth’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, however, the knowledge that they will serve as officers in the United States Army one day has shaped their view of their time at the College and beyond.

Members of Kappa Delta Epsilon sorority voted almost unanimously to change the theme of its annual invite-only party from Derby to Woodstock on Tuesday evening. This change comes roughly a year after the protest at both Derby and Alpha Chi Alpha’s annual Pigstick party last May, at which around 20 Dartmouth students demonstrated against police brutality toward people of color.

The Library of Congress will replace the term “illegal aliens” with “noncitizens” and “unauthorized immigrants” in its subject headings, a decision that was announced on March 22. This change, which was initially proposed by Dartmouth’s Coalition for Immigration Reform, Equality and DREAMers, will lead to a sweep of heading changes for all libraries in the United States and Canada that use records distributed by the Library of Congress. The changes will come into effect no earlier than May 2016.

All eight Ivy League coaches recently voted to eliminate full-contact hitting from their regular season practices at the annual coaches’ meeting two weeks ago. The unanimous decision will now go to each the league’s athletic directors, policy committee and university presidents for approval before the policy goes into affect.

At the Oscars this year, Lady Gaga performed an emotionally-charged rendition of her song “Til it Happens to You.” Nearing the end of her performance, she was joined onstage by a group 50 young survivors of sexual violence that included two alums: Nastassja Schmiedt, a former member of the Class of 2015, and Lea Roth ’13.

Last night, Student Assembly held a town hall event to present its Bill of Rights draft and answer questions from students, faculty and staff interested in the document. Around 30 students and several members of the administration attended the event.

Last night, Dartmouth’s very own shark-tank style, entrepreneurial show, The Pitch, was held at Loew Auditorium from 7 to 9 p.m. The event attracted dozens of audience members as 20 groups pitched their start-up ideas to a panel of six judges.

In the spring term, Dartmouth will be rolling out its third annual offering of “Inside Dartmouth’s Budget,” a six-session non-credit course available to undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff. Each session is two hours long and will take place in the Life Sciences Center on Thursday evenings from March 31 to May 5.

On Feb. 26, Dartmouth students will gather in Baker-Berry Library at 8 p.m. to attend Founders’ Day, where they will get sorted into their respective housing communities. The library will be separated into sections for each house community and students will break off into receptions to meet the other members of their new communities.

On a campus where most students do not stay longer than the usual four years, faculty members who stand with student activists in the push for increased diversity, inclusivity and equality at the College are the drivers of continued dialogue at Dartmouth. In the fall of 2015, following the Black Lives Matter protest in Baker-Berry Library, 150 professors and staff members demonstrated their solidarity with student activists by signing a letter of support addressed to the College administration.

On Monday, Alice Liou ’13 started a petition on Change.org pushing for the immediate creation of an Asian-American studies department. As of press time, 316 people have signed the petition, which has been widely circulated on social media sites such as Facebook.

Yesterday, five faculty members spoke to a full Filene Auditorium about their perspectives on the Black Lives Matter course first offered last spring. The event, part of the ongoing Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations, was sponsored by the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and featured geography professor Richard Wright; lecturer of geography and women, gender and sexuality studies Treva Ellison; English professor Aimee Bahng; geography professor Abigail Neely; and mathematics professor Craig Sutton.

Last week marked the beginning of a series of events celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and accomplishments. The programming, which will continue until Feb. 1, featured a keynote address by guest speaker Rohina Malik, a multi-faith celebration with Rev. Leah Daughtry ’84, a documentary screening and discussion hosted by the Geisel School of Medicine, a faculty celebration breakfast, the 2016 Student Forum on Global Learning and the 24th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Candlelight Vigil Procession.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Initiatives released its first annual report on faculty diversity on Thursday, Jan 7. The report summarizes the work of the newly established office in recruiting, retaining and supporting underrepresented minority faculsty, with the goal of increasing URM faculty to 25 percent of tenure track faculty by 2020, up from the current 16 percent of Dartmouth faculty who are URM.

The College’s general faculty voted to advise the faculties of Arts and Sciences and the professional schools to recommend to College President Phil Hanlon that he ask the Board of Trustees to create a School of Graduate and Advanced Studies at Dartmouth at the annual general faculty meeting in Alumni Hall on Monday.
