There were 48 reports of rape at locations related to Dartmouth in 2015. With the amount of reports increasing according to the Clery Act data, the College has been improving resources to help survivors of such assaults.

The Geisel School of Medicine will undergo an overhaul due to budgetary constraints, College President Phil Hanlon announced to students, faculty and staff at a town hall meeting in Kellogg Auditorium yesterday. While specific details have not been finalized pending faculty input, Geisel interim dean Duane Compton has developed a three-year plan to stabilize the budget and reallocate resources within the medical school, Compton said in an interview before the town hall.

The National Institute of Health awarded the Geisel School of Medicine’s Center for Technology and Behavioral Health a $5 million grant for research regarding motivation and self-regulation of behaviors, specifically as it pertains to smoking and obesity.

International applicants to the Class of 2020 will be considered under a “need-aware” policy, as opposed to the “need-blind” policy used for the past eight years, College spokesperson Diana Lawrence wrote in an email. The admissions office had been need-blind for international students from the Class of 2012 through the Class of 2019.

Former dean of admissions and financial aid Maria Laskaris left her position to become the special assistant to the provost for arts and innovation, Provost Carolyn Dever announced on Aug. 27. Fall term classes will be starting on Sept. 16 instead of Sept. 14 to accommodate the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah, which begins on the 13th of the month and ends on the 15th and coincided with the original start date, college spokesperson Diana Lawrence wrote in an email. There will be classes on two Saturdays in the term, Sept. 26 and Oct. 24, to make up for the two missed days.

Harvard history professor Walter Johnson gave a lecture yesterday about American slavery and what Johnson believed were common misconceptions about the labeling of slaves and slave owners in the pre-Civil War American South. The talk, titled “What Is Wrong With Saying Slavery ‘Dehumanized’ Black People” saw nearly 50 attendees.

Greek houses are in the process of searching for one male and one female faculty advisor, as required by College President Phil Hanlon’s “Moving Dartmouth Forward” policy initiative. Greek Letter Organizations and Societies director Wes Schaub said the goal is to have the advisors in place by this fall, though there is no official deadline.

Dartmouth has selected five scholars to be the first members of the Society of Fellows initiative, out of an initial applicant pool of more than 1,700 postdoctoral fellows, English professor Donald Pease said. The selected fellows will begin three-year fellowships this fall and will conduct research at the College for at least one year, vice provost for academic initiatives Denise Anthony said.

The “Moving Dartmouth Forward” hard alcohol ban, which prohibits any undergraduates, regardless of age, from possessing or consuming alcohol with a proof higher than 30 on campus, was officially implemented this past Saturday, and Greek leaders are planning for how the ban will affect their individual organizations and social events.
