The first time I stepped into the Tower Room, I audibly gasped. It was during a late-night tour of Dartmouth, part of the Dimensions program, and I attracted some strange looks from my fellow tour-goers. But I couldn’t help myself. The hardwood floors and tables, the shelves full of dusty old books, the cozy nooks and alcoves, the vaulted ceilings, the warm glow of the lamps and the chandeliers — all of these things flooded into my vision, enamoring me and exciting me and overwhelming me. It was the kind of storied, iconic library that I’d only ever dreamed about, a real-life Hogwarts conjured up before my eyes. I couldn’t believe that this was a real place that mere mortals could casually enter.

It’s a recurring theme in discussions amongst Vampire Weekend fans that their albums correspond to seasons. Their self-titled debut album, full of perky strings and New England imagery, is reminiscent of a collegiate fall. Their sophomore effort, “Contra,” with its bright synths and upbeat tempos, brings to mind a sunny summer day. And “Modern Vampires of the City,” their third album, is the definition of wintry, with its black and white cover and its existential, morbid themes.

As temperatures reached the mid-90s this past week, students have struggled to escape the heat. While the night usually brings a reprieve from the heat for students, the recent heat wave stayed strong past sunset, creating issues for students trying to sleep in non-air conditioned dorms and forcing the College to offer alternative options.

Dartmouth will not build a 750-bed residence hall in College Park due to the high cost of such a project, College President Phil Hanlon announced during yesterday’s termly faculty of arts and sciences meeting. The original proposal potentially threatened to demolish Shattuck Observatory.

The owner of the West Lebanon Domino’s pizza franchise has filed an application for a building permit to open a new Domino’s pizza restaurant in Hanover. The proposed location is 73 South Main Street, behind the Irving Gas station.

On Monday morning, the College announced a new communications framework that will form the basis for future communications from divisions across the College. In addition, the College debuted a new visual identity, including a new logo with a new font, an updated “Lone Pine” and a new “D-Pine,” with the Lone Pine placed inside of a “D.”

A former Dartmouth student has filed a lawsuit against the College, alleging that he was unfairly expelled last year after what he claims was a biased disciplinary proceeding that violated his Title IX rights. The suit was filed on Jan. 12 in the U.S. District Court of New Hampshire.

The College has appointed Allison Lyng O’Connell as the new Title IX coordinator and Clery Act compliance officer, replacing outgoing coordinator Heather Lindkvist. Appointed Aug. 16, she is responsible for ensuring Dartmouth’s compliance with gender equity and campus safety laws.

On Monday evening, members of the Upper Valley community gathered on the Green to hold a vigil in commemoration of those affected last Saturday during the “Unite the Right” demonstration in Charlottesville, Virginia, when a member of the alt-right allegedly drove his car into a crowd of left-wing counter-protesters, injuring several and killing one woman, Heather Heyer.

For a year and a half, Dartmouth students and Hanover residents have had a choice of three Thai restaurants in town — a high number given Hanover’s size. But one of these restaurants has shut down and plans to relocate, while another will be changing its name in the coming months and expanding its menu to serve Vietnamese food.

On Wednesday, 1vyG, an advocacy group for first-generation students, sent out a press release announcing its “No Apologies Initiative,” which calls for universities to eliminate application fees for low-income and first-generation college students by the 2017-18 application cycle. Student Assembly president Nick Harrington ’17 signed the press release, alongside student government representatives from the seven other Ivy League institutions, Northwestern University, Stanford University and the University of Chicago, as well as representatives for first-generation, low-income student groups from all members of the Ivy League.

Provost Carolyn Dever has announced the departure of Vice-Provost of Student Affairs Inge-Lise Ameer amidst a reorganization of the administration’s management structure. As part of these changes, which go into effect this term, the vice-provost’s position will be eliminated and many of its responsibilities will be assigned to Dean of the College Rebecca Biron.
