Brimming with dark humor and painfully unaware characters, R.F. Kuang’s novel “Yellowface” is a satire that unpacks the difficulty of being an Asian writer in today’s industry. The novel evokes instances of white authors profiting from writing stories about the suffering of non-white communities and real-life, race-based literary controversies — like the “Who is the Bad Art Friend?” feud — a nearly decade-long dispute between writers Sonya Larson and Dawn Dorland regarding race, authorship and friendship that became publicized by the 2021 New York Times article of the same name. Thematically, “Yellowface” is entrenched in the current dialogue regarding the ownership of culture and identity in literature. To tell this tale, Kuang masterfully crafts the narration of her main character to create a voice that is both convincing and appalling.

This year’s Oscar-nominated, live-action shorts are some of the most compelling pieces of cinema that I have ever had the privilege of viewing. Each of the films shown at the Hopkins Center for the Arts’ screening of the program tells an unforgettable, emotional story that feels highly relevant amidst the tumultuous global events of today's world. The three shorts in this review gripped audiences for their ability to tell stories that showcase how characters process tragedy, trauma, and grief.

The new documentary “32 Sounds” premiered at Dartmouth in the Loew auditorium on Jan. 20, offering students and spectators a new way to experience sound. Though today’s college students never grew up with cassette tapes, record players or CDs, we interact with sound everyday without realizing it — particularly in the age of social media, with viral Tik Tok songs and sound bytes. Nonetheless, we rarely pay unparalleled attention to sound itself. Green’s newest film opened my eyes to the richness that sound adds to everyday life. His film underscores the importance of sound in preserving our most beloved, albeit fleeting, memories.

As the classic image of Totoro against a bright blue backdrop glowed on the screen, I couldn’t help but be reminded that “The Boy and the Heron” was the last movie that Hayao Miyazaki — co-founder and director of Studio Ghibli — would ever create. He told his producer that this film would be his last. Miyazaki won his first Golden Globe at age 83 for “The Boy and the Heron,” on Jan. 7.

After watching “Saltburn,” my first reaction was not one of shock or disgust, but rather disappointment. I remember thinking what a shame it was that from now on, the film would be mentioned in tandem with the likes of “Brideshead Revisited” and “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” when “Saltburn” is but a glitter-covered, uninspiring imitation of such stories.

A passage in the fourth chapter of the Book of John tells the story of Jesus approaching a Samaritan woman at a well. During their exchange, Jesus reveals himself to the woman — who is meant to represent the lowest class in society — as the son of God and offers her everlasting life. Standing at the well, he says, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give will never thirst.”

It seems like everyone has a Disney character they cherish: Aladdin, Mulan, Simba, you name it. Many of us associate an emotional childhood memory with Disney’s movies. Disney’s enchanting tales reside as pages from our personal storybooks. I fondly remember singing at the top of my lungs the songs from the movie “Moana” during sleepovers with friends.

On Oct. 13, indie-rock supergroup boygenius marked the near-end of their tour, aptly-titled “the tour,” with the release of a four-track EP, “the rest.” The band, which consists of the individually acclaimed Julian Baker, Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers, released their first full-length album, “the record,” this past March, which is why many fans were surprised by the announcement of “the rest” six months after. Though the EP’s name may seem to imply a collection of leftovers, Bridgers, in a recent interview with Apple Music, claimed that she believes “these songs don’t belong on ‘the record,’” and I agree.

Troye Sivan’s third album, “Something to Give Each Other,” has been steadily gaining prominence in the media for quite some time now. First reaching prominence on TikTok with a dance to accompany the single “Rush,” the album has been long anticipated. The album boasts ten tracks, including collaborations with singers Guitarricadelafuente (and yes, they perform a duet in Spanish!) and Jessica Pratt. “Something to Give Each Other” is a testament to Sivan’s growth as an artist, unlocking an emotional depth and maturity to create a powerful album that enraptures listeners.

Ed Sheeran’s newest album, “Autumn Variations” came out on Sept. 29 after minimal marketing — there were no singles or music videos released prior to its release. Though seasonally appropriate, the title of the album may pique the interest of devoted Sheeran fans because it is not named after a mathematical symbol like his previous albums. Instead, the album — from its title to its feel — is truly unique and vastly different from Sheeran’s previous releases. Overall, “Autumn Variations” is a triumph: an incredibly creative and intricate collection of music. The album’s sincerity, storytelling and ability to depict the complexity of the human condition via its meaningful lyrics is unparalleled in today’s musical landscape.

After a few delays, pop and rap superstar Drake released his eighth solo studio album “For All The Dogs” on Oct. 6. The album features a long and diverse list of collaborators including 21 Savage, SZA, Chief Keef and Yeat. With 23 tracks clocking in at 84 minutes, the album is much longer than many of his contemporaries’ projects. But apart from a few standout tracks, the album fails to be an inspired or cohesive project, squandering the talent of its mega roster of producers and collaborators to become largely superfluous streaming bait.

The movie “Bottoms” was released in theaters on Aug. 25, but has since generated an uproar of commentary — and it’s easy to see why. The movie, made by the producers of “Cocaine Bear” and “Pitch Perfect,” does not fit accurately into one genre, and consists of characters and storylines that are underdeveloped. While this movie teases at the promise of portraying a believable lesbian relationship with a compelling storyline, “Bottoms” remains, aptly, at the bottom of my watch list.

Kenneth Branagh’s latest film, an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s best-selling detective, Hercule Poirot, premiered last week. Movies and television series featuring Poirot more often than not fail to live up to the greatness of Christie’s novels featuring Poirot’s detective work. I went into “A Haunting in Venice” with low expectations but left the theater pleasantly surprised.

Pop star Doja Cat has just released her fourth studio album “Scarlet,” a marked departure from her previous feminine aesthetic into a darker, punk-inspired style. Doja told Variety, “I know that I’ve done a lot of pink and soft things, a lot of pop and glittery sounds … but for this next era, I’m going in a more masculine direction.” With her new album, Doja is still Doja at heart — she once again showcases her depth and breadth as a vocal performer by effortlessly switching between singing and rapping. However, “Scarlet” thematically over-promises and under delivers, suffering from a lack of features and its 51 minute runtime that overstays its welcome.

I grew up religiously watching coming-of-age movies. From classics like “The Breakfast Club” to more recent hits like “Lady Bird,” I believe that coming-of-age movies have a special power. These movies remind us of the universality of growing up by tackling diverse themes of family, friendship, romance and more. While the transition to adulthood is a personal process influenced by each teenager’s unique circumstances, the very concept of growing up transcends the boundaries of culture and religion: Growing up is hard, but you are not alone.

“I am light as a feather and as stiff as a board,” sings 20-year old Olivia Rodrigo in the first line of her long-anticipated sophomore album, “GUTS,” released on Sept. 8. This familiar phrase serves as a fitting introduction to the album’s primary themes: grappling with one’s own sense of self while dealing with society’s relentless expectations. “GUTS” tells the story of a teenage girl on the brink of adulthood uncovering the distinct realities of girlhood and womanhood through the lenses of heartbreak, fame and self-doubt.
