In February 2016, Dartmouth announced that it had created three working groups to examine diversity and inclusivity in the College’s faculty, staff and student body. The College then announced its Action Plan for Excellence in May. The plan, which focuses on six pillars to promote diversity and inclusivity, includes a long-term plan to ensure diversity in Dartmouth’s faculty.

Christ Redeemer Church, a Hanover-based Baptist congregation led by Pastor Don Willeman, recently introduced updated plans to the Hanover Planning Board over a proposed church that the congregation wishes to build on a plot of land it purchased in 2017. The plans for this new church were originally submitted to the board in 2016 and have since been updated to address residents’ and board members’ concerns about building a church in a residential area. Ultimately, the Hanover Zoning Board of Adjustment will have the final say.

Last week, the College reported a total of 22,005 applications for the Class of 2022, marking a 9.8 percent increase in applications compared to last year. Applications for the Class of 2021 totaled 20,034.

A wave of cold weather struck the East Coast last week, setting record low temperatures in New Hampshire and nearby states like Maine and Vermont. Despite this, Hanover town manager Julia Griffin said she did not believe that Hanover itself broke any previous low-temperature record.

Chemistry professor Katherine Mirica and Dartmouth former postdoctoral fellow and senior scientist at technology startup C2Sense Merry Smith have developed a conductive smart fabric capable of detecting and protecting users from toxic gases. The innovation, named “Self-Organized Framework on Textiles,” improves on a previous sensor technology-related project that Mirica and Smith previously collaborated on, Mirica said. C2Sense is a startup based in Cambridge, Massachusetts that develops gas sensors.

Latinx Heritage Month has been celebrating the Latinx community and identity on campus since mid-September and will continue hosting events until Nov. 1 despite decreased funding from the College, according to Latinx Heritage Month Planning Committee members Rosa Mendoza ’20 and Juan Laínez Iscoa ’20. This year’s theme is “our strength lives in our roots” with the goal of uniting everyone into a community motivated to push forward and proudly embrace their own culture, Mendoza said.

On Monday evening, 22 students from the Class of 2018 were inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, while nine students from the Class of 2019 were awarded the Phi Beta Kappa Sophomore Prize. Fall induction to Phi Beta Kappa is given to students who, after three years of matriculation, rank among the top 20 students in their class based on GPA. The sophomore award is given to the highest ranking students in the class after five terms of enrollment at Dartmouth.

In July, Thai restaurant Kata Thai owner Janet Wong and Samosa Man owner Fuad Ndibalema began the process of merging their eateries into a single, cross-cultural restaurant that will replace what is currently Kata Thai. Ndibalema said that the transition will be complete on Monday. The merger comes as the second major change to Thai restaurants in downtown Hanover following the closure of Thai Orchid.

In mid-July, former Canoe Club owner John Chapin announced that he sold the restaurant to a group of partners that included its longtime bartender, Daniel Levitt. The announcement came amid other major changes to the Hanover restaurant scene, including the abrupt closure of Everything But Anchovies in May and the closure of Thai Orchid in July.
