The Dartmouth Men’s Rugby Football Club concluded their 77th 15s season on Homecoming weekend, ending the year with a 3-3 record. Amongst the school’s athletic teams, men’s rugby is undoubtedly one of the largest and most successful squads, claiming numerous Ivy League and National Championships throughout its storied history. Just last spring, the DRFC claimed its most recent trophy in the annual Ivy League Rugby 7s tournament here at Brophy Field.

As the rain poured down on Oct. 21, women’s rugby fell just short of Harvard University with a final score of 19-17. Despite the final result, the team showed impressive grit and adaptability — especially given the rough weather conditions present at the game. Head coach Katie Dowty — coaching her ninth season at Dartmouth — said she was proud of how hard the team fought throughout the game.

It was a Big Green sweep this past weekend, with both the women’s varsity rugby team and Dartmouth Rugby Football Club clinching Ivy League 7s titles. The tournament took place at Brophy Field, the Big Green’s home pitch — an “incredible” environment due to support from the student body and families of the athletes, according to men’s head coach Kyle Sumsion.

In November, women’s rugby captured the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association 15s championship for the second year in a row. The win — rugby’s third in four appearances in the title game — also clinched a second consecutive undefeated 15s season for the team.

On Saturday, the Big Green rugby team traveled to Cambridge, Massachusetts to play its first game of the season against Ivy League opponent Harvard University. Both Dartmouth and Harvard entered the contest undefeated with 4-0 records. The Big Green fell behind early, entering the second half down 5-19, but was able to rally for a 31-29 victory after a try in the closing seconds of the game.

Dartmouth (4-0) cruised to its 13th win in a row — including last season — after dominating Mount St. Mary’s 79-0 on the road in Emmitsburg, Md. on Saturday. For only the sixth time in women’s rugby history, Dartmouth scored over 70 points. 10 different players entered the try zone, helping the team record its first shutout win since the 2021 season, when Dartmouth last beat Mount St. Mary’s 70-0.

Women’s rugby has started off the 15s fall season incredibly strong. To begin competition, the team won its first away match 29-3 in Connecticut against Sacred Heart University on Sep. 17. The Big Green captured another win at home on Sep. 24 against Quinnipiac University, 41-10.

Lilly Durbin ’21, who recently won Dartmouth Athletics’ Agnes Kurtz Award, is a fifth-year senior on the women’s rugby team and led her team to a national championship this past fall. Durbin has overcome numerous physical challenges that have kept her from playing rugby — after knee surgery and heart surgery in 2019, she returned strong to lead the Big Green with 15 tries this fall, contributing to their national championship win. The Dartmouth sat down with Durbin to discuss her experience playing rugby, career highlights and advice for her freshman year self.

Women’s rugby returned to the pitch on Saturday, April 2 to compete in the Crimson 7s Tournament, the Big Green’s first 7s competition since 2019. Both the competitive and development teams participated, with the competitive team placing third overall and the development team coming out with two wins and one loss. This competition kicked off the 7s season for the Big Green, who seek to claim another national title after winning the 15s championship this past November.

Five members of the Dartmouth women’s rugby team have been selected to compete in the Can-Am Series. The competition is a two-game series between the American and Canadian teams and will be held in Ottawa on the University of Ottawa campus from July 28 to August 7. The competition helps develop younger players in Canada and the United States and exposes them to the pressure of playing on an international stage. The goal is to create a strong pool of athletes that can later compete on their country’s international team.

The women’s rugby team hosted the Ivy League tournament over the weekend, finishing second after falling to the Bears in the final game. The men’s rugby team won the Ivy League title for the eighth consecutive year after its Homecoming win over Brown University in October.
