The discovery stemmed from information police gathered during a search of nearby property owned by Bennett's uncle, Michael Jacques, who was arrested on unrelated sexual assault charges on Sunday and has been called a "person of interest" in the case, police reports say. http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/03/news/bennett/ http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/03/news/bennett/ Tue, 01 Jul 2008 07:00:00 +0000 NEWS: Vt. girl missing since Thursday Five days after Vermont initiated its first Amber Alert, Brooke Bennett, a 12-year-old resident of Braintree, Vt., remains missing. Bennett was last seen at a Cumberland Farms convenience store in Randolph, Vt. on the morning of June 25, where, she told relatives, she was planning to meet a friend to travel to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. The investigation into Bennett's disappearance currently focuses on the Randolph property of Bennett's uncle, Michael Jacques, who drove Bennett to the convenience store before her disappearance and was arrested on unrelated sexual assault charges on Sunday, according to a Vermont State Police press release. http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/01/news/bennett/ http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/01/news/bennett/ Tue, 01 Jul 2008 07:00:00 +0000 NEWS: AoA suit withdrawn, funds still questioned Following Friday's confirmation that the Grafton County Superior Court had approved the dismissal of the Association of Alumni's lawsuit against the College, new information has come to light about the funding of the suit and the involvement of The Hanover Institute, a non-profit organization that has traditionally sponsored causes critical of College policies. The court action brings to an end the eight-month legal saga in which the Association attempted to bar the College's Board of Trustees from adding eight members not elected by alumni to its membership. http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/01/news/aoa/ http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/01/news/aoa/ Tue, 01 Jul 2008 07:00:00 +0000 NEWS: Obama, Clinton visit Unity, N.H. Trips A group of sophomore students who decided to put the stripping in "Strips" this weekend by skinny dipping in the Connecticut River had their nude foray unexpectedly interrupted by a family of canoers. The group escaped detection by quickly diving underwater, but upon reemerging found that all of their clothes had been stolen by a fellow trippee, said Averil Spencer '10, co-director of this year's Sophomore Trips program. http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/01/news/trips/ http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/01/news/trips/ Tue, 01 Jul 2008 07:00:00 +0000 NEWS: Mont. The implementation of the decision was delayed a year to allow for an adjustment period and to publicize resources to help people stop smoking. "DHMC is a health care institution, and our mission, vision and goals call for us to achieve the healthiest population possible, and to provide the best care to every patient, every time," John Butterfly, a cardiologist and executive medical director at DHMC who chaired the committee charged with implementing the new policy, said in the press release. "We simply can't live up to that mission if we don't send the message in the strongest possible terms that smoking and tobacco use is bad for you." http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/01/news/briefs/ http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/01/news/briefs/ Tue, 01 Jul 2008 07:00:00 +0000 OPINION: The Devil's Consultant And so summer has begun. Despite the persistent rain, barbeque grills still flare with the conflagrating promise of charred meats and a fireside recitation of Hesiod's Theogony. Yes, you're a big bad sophomore, and it's the eponymous summer of your life. A nihilistic approach should be natural, laudable and liberating. After two years of work, perhaps we've earned a trip to old Camp Dartmouth. No other time could be better for the hedonist; the guilty pleasure of R & R weighs not upon our collective conscience. And the LORD saw this, and it was good. http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/01/opinion/gottlieb/ http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/01/opinion/gottlieb/ Tue, 01 Jul 2008 07:00:00 +0000 OPINION: Profane Tank A light has gone out of the world: George Carlin is dead. Not only was he a brilliant comedian, but a fierce opponent of dogmatism and political correctness. In an obituary in Tuesday's New York Times, Jerry Seinfeld wrote of his friend's performances, "It was like the naughtiest, most fun grown-up you ever met was reading you a bedtime story." http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/01/opinion/buntz/ http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/01/opinion/buntz/ Tue, 01 Jul 2008 07:00:00 +0000 SPORTS: Kurt Busch races to first win It has been a tale of two seasons for the Busch brothers in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The Chicago Cubs are approaching the halfway point of the 2008 baseball season with one of the best records in the game. Historians can attest to the fact that the last time the Cubs had the league's best record as late as June was in 1908, the last time the Cubs won a World Series. For you math enthusiasts, that's a 99-year championship drought, the longest in the four major sports. http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/01/sports/karr/ http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/01/sports/karr/ Tue, 01 Jul 2008 07:00:00 +0000 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT: Summer T.V. shows entertain, enthrall with new seasons A common notion of boob tube viewership is that in the interminable, sticky-humid dogs days of summer, good television programming goes to die. Unfortunately, for the most part, this conception's a true one. However, fellow bored and semi-lucid sophomores, there's still some entertaining if not quality stuff to be found in the sun-smoldered wreckage of what is otherwise a completely throwaway season for T.V. Take my word for it: whether you're a bare-shirted guy or a shiny-legged gal, forego a sprawl on the Green and spend an hour or two soaking up the mind-numbing, Technicolor joy of NBC, VH1 and Bravo. Granted, in all likelihood a 40-inch Samsung will not give you a sexy tan (if you're too far away from it), but when you think about it, that Samsung also won't give you a suspicious new mole underneath your navel. Non-carcinogenic summer fun, anyone? http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/01/arts/tvshows/ http://thedartmouth.com/2008/07/01/arts/tvshows/ Tue, 01 Jul 2008 07:00:00 +0000 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT: Hood and Hop explore African culture and identity in Festival Though recent flash thunderstorms may put a hold on outdoor activities, the Summer Arts Festival: AFRICAS brings the color and vibrancy of the season of summer to days spent indoors.
