Dartmouth Soundoff: Winter Carnival Edition

By Margarette Nelson, The Dartmouth Staff | 2/6/13 8:00am

With Winter Carnival starting today (oh wait, it doesn't officially start until Friday?), I thought I would post a few tracks that I would love to hear during my Winter Carnival 2013 escapades (read: when I go to frats). I'm not necessarily trying to rock anyone's world or stretch anyone's musical intellect with this week's column, so just humor me.

"Midnight City" — M83

When this song finally crossed my radar a few months ago, it seemed eerily familiar. Maybe it's been a thing since my freshman fall, and I was just oblivious. Great electronic track, catchy synth hook — a DJ could easily have some fun with this one.

"Take You Higher" — Goodwill and Hook N Sling

Catchy electronic dance music remix of Angus and Julia Stone's "Big Jet Plane." Be in the right place at the right time this weekend and you're bound to hear this one somewhere.

"Heartbeat" — Childish Gambino

Although a little on the dark side for a dance floor, a good DJ could speed it up, or maybe mix it with a lighter track. Also Childish Gambino is from Atlanta (hometown shout-out).

"The Night Out" — Martin Solveig

I'm relatively unqualified to discuss EDM, especially since I didn't know it was even a thing until I got to Dartmouth (the South is just catching up on this trend), so Solveig is probably old news. That being said, it's not as if I posted "Hello," which I — and probably the rest of campus — am sick of.

"Young Elevatin' Successful (YES)" — Young Riot

I'm not a huge fan of Young Riot's other stuff, but I am a fan of the tried and true method of a rapper taking an alternative/indie track and rapping over it. In "YES," Young Riot uses Two Door Cinema Club's "What You Want" as his backing track, and it’s probably one of the best rapping-over-alternative-tracks I’ve heard.

"Daylight (Remix)" — Ninjasonix

This is the other side of rapping over an indie track. I don't know if I would refer to this as great music, but it's a funny remix on Matt and Kim's hit. After a big weekend, the lyrics of this song might be a little #tooreal for some people.

"Closer" — Tegan and Sara

I'm just going to say upfront, I feel very, very strongly about this song. "Closer" has been my little music obsession of the week. The album for which this song was the leading single just came out last Tuesday (as if these girls need any more people plugging for them), and everyone should listen to it. Anyway, I want this song to be a thing. As in, I want to hear it everywhere.

"All Night Longer" — Sammy Adams

Even though I enjoy this song, I wasn't going to include it for a number of reasons: the party-hard lyrics could be interpreted as trying too hard; "All Night Longer" was mentioned in one of my columns a few weeks ago; Adams' unattractively massive ego, et cetera, et cetera. But then, literally as I was writing this column, I received this text from one of my good friends, who is a self-described "Sammy Adams hater."

So now it's on the list. I know what everyone is thinking and don't worry, it's not like I'll be talking about Katy Perry next week.
