Telephone scammers pose as Hanover Police

Safety and Security has received numerous reports of telephone scammers claiming to be the Hanover Police Department, interim director of Safety and Security Keysi Montás said in a campus-wide email this afternoon.

The scammers' caller ID shows the Hanover Police Department's phone number, but the calls are not from this number. When a person picks up the phone, the scammer claims that the person on the receiving end of the call was involved in fraud and has an outstanding fine of $5,000. The scammer then demands payment and may threaten to issue an arrest warrant if the respondent hangs up the phone.

The scammers may have the name or other personal information of the person they're calling. Montás said that if you receive such a call, hang up immediately and call Hanover Police or Safety and Security.

Hanover Police can be reached at (603) 643-222 and Safety and Security at (603) 646-4000.
