Sam Macomber will replace Chase Gilmore as Interfraternity Council president

Sam Macomber '16 will take over as Interfraternity Council president following a vote by IFC members and fraternity presidents on Tuesday night, according to a statement released by the IFC. Macomberwill replace Chase Gilmore '16, who chose to step down following the derecognition of Alpha Delta fraternity, of which he was a member.

The Organizational Adjudication Committee derecognized AD as a student organization in relation to the branding of new members last fall while the fraternity was under suspension.

Gilmore, who wrote in an email that he supports Macomber's election, will continue to serve the IFC in an advisory capacity and attend meetings.

The IFC’s bylaws state that any member of its executive board must be “a member of a fraternity,” although the bylaws do not specify if the organization must be officially recognized by the College.

An executive may be voted out of office by a four-fifths vote of the Representative Council – composed of the IFC executives and fraternity presidents – if he has failed to effectively discharge the duties of his office. He may also forfeit his office, as in Gilmore’s case.

To replace any officer other than the council president, IFC executives receive nominations from interested candidates and a nominating committee selects a candidate to fill the vacancy.

IFC’s bylaws state that the vice president, currently John Comerci ’16, would fill the office of president in the event the office became vacant until such a time as a new president could be elected. The bylaws do not specify if that period should last until the next normally scheduled election or until the IFC itself can hold such an election.

Macomber, a member of Beta Alpha Omega fraternity, served as IFC's treasurer for the first four weeks of spring term.

"I have the utmost confidence in his ability to steer the fraternity system on the right course and to leave the system better than he found it," Gilmore wrote of Macomber's election.

Gilmore did not respond to requests for further comment.

On IFC’s website, current IFC secretary Dan Pham ’16 is now listed as both council secretary and treasurer, Macomber’s former role.

Numerous officials from the Greek Letter Organizations and Societies office – including director Wes Schaub and assistant director Sam Waltemeyer – did not respond to repeated requests seeking comment.

IFC public relations and outreach chair James Verhagen ’16, who is abroad on an off-term, redirected requests seeking comment to IFC executives who are on campus this term. IFC service chair Peter Gips ’16 said council members would not be providing comment beyond IFC’s statement.

Comerci, Pham, IFC programming chair Kevin Muzzi ’16 and IFC recruitment chair Felipe Jaramillo ’16 did not respond to requests for comment by press time.

Various fraternity presidents and representatives from the Panhellenic Council, Greek Leadership Council and the Gender Inclusive Greek Council either declined to comment or did not respond to requests seeking comment.
