The Dartmouth

Women's hockey wins, ties in weekend New York trip

Against Cornell, Carli Clemis '09 got the start in goal over Kate Lane '06 and was carried to her first collegiate win by an impressive third period comeback, capped by captain Tiffany Hagge '06's fifth game-winning goal of the season.

Cornell essentially laid siege to the Dartmouth net during the second period, finishing with 17 shots on goal. The Lady Green fell behind 3-2 after giving up a pair of goals during the frame.

The second intermission seemed to give the Big Green a chance to compose itself, and the team came out firing. Less than 60 seconds into the final period, Danielle Grundy '05 struck next to even things up.

Dartmouth spent the next 15 minutes trying in vain to pull ahead, until, with just over four minutes remaining, Hagge scored her second goal of the night.

The Green was carried to the comeback win on the strength of a dominant third period in which it landed 15 shots on goal to Cornell's eight.

On Sunday, the Big Green played Colgate missing not only offensive lynchpin Shannon Bowman '09, who has been out for nearly a week playing for the Canadian under-22 national team, but also Hagge.

Dartmouth controlled much of the game but never led and only managed to escape with a tie on the strength of some late game freshman heroics. While freshmen would lead the charge against the Raiders, Clemis would not be one of them, as her 32 saves against Cornell did not keep her between the pipes for the Colgate match.

Though Bowman might be the most prominent freshman icer, her classmates proved that they could play too, finishing the night with a combined three assists and the game-tying goal.

Down 2-1 late in the third period, Julia Bronson '09 evened the score with the first goal of her college career. Fellow freshmen Maggie Kennedy and Sarah Newnam assisted on the play. Kennedy also collaborated with Grundy, whose second-period power play goal briefly tied things up midway through the second period.

While the Big Green capitalized on that power play, they couldn't score on the skater advantage they earned late in overtime, failing to slip a shot past Colgate goalie Elayna Hamashuk over the last 1:27.

Hamashuk was stingy all night. Dartmouth peppered her with shots, finishing with 43 on goal, but was denied time and time again. Colgate finished with 21 shots on goal.

Both teams fired on net 11 times in the first period, but Colgate's offense was less than prolific for the remainder.

In a series of events indicative of the way things were going for the Big Green, Dartmouth opened the third period seemingly intent on pulling into the lead. Despite earning a pair of power play opportunities, the College just could not find the back of the net. Then, with the power play elapsed, the Raiders took control of the puck and scored on their first shot of the period.

Dartmouth almost pulled out a weekend sweep -- firing seven overtime shots on goal to Colgate's one -- but had to settle for a tie.

The Big Green next sees action against the University of Connecticut in Hanover on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
