The Dartmouth

A Tribalist Tone

To the Editor:

I am disappointed to the see The Dartmouth giving more than half a page to a columnist who week after week gives vent to his "strong personal emotions" -- bigotry and hatred, toward Palestinians, Muslims and Arabs ("Loving the Bomb: How Palestinian Society Glorifies Extremism," Jan. 25). There is no point in showing the narrowness of his sources, the intellectual failings of his arguments, or the complexity of the situation he discuss with a simple-mindedness that reflects badly on a school of Dartmouth's quality. By his own admission he has no intention of "changing the minds of people who rationally support the Palestinian cause." His position, it seems, is simply a tribalist one: my guys are good; yours are evil. There is no reasoning with that sort of argument.

If The Dartmouth wishes to have a scholarly discussion of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, then there are others from the many diverse sides of this difficult issue who could enlighten readers. This sort of screed, however, simply embarrasses Dartmouth, The Dartmouth and its readers.
