Track teams see super performances at BU

Members of the men's and women's track teams competed this past weekend in the Boston University Classic. The meet displayed progress for many members of both teams as eight men posted times that qualified for the IC4A meet while six members of the women's team qualified for the ECAC meet.

Joe Marucheck '04 also won the triple jump with a mark of 45-7. While his result was not quite long enough to qualify him along with his teammates, he seemed unconcerned.

"My muscles were pretty tired, and I didn't jump off a full approach until the finals round of the triple jump," Marucheck said. "The important issue was to win the meet. This week I am looking to get the IC4A mark. I had a great jumping workout in practice [Wednesday], and the form felt better than ever, so I am excited to see what I can do this weekend."

The other men to qualify were Brian Hanley '05 and Bart Van Veghel '06 in the mile, Tyler Haney '03 in the 400, and Mark Nichol '04 and Noah Kaufman '05 in the 5,000. All three Dartmouth entries in the 3,000, Zach Strong '05, Quinn Thomas '05 and Chris Dragone '06, posted qualifying marks as well.

The women had an equally successful weekend in Boston. Cecily Garber '03 and Jessie Allen-Young '03 qualified in the mile with times of 4:50.76 and 4:54.39, respectively. In the 3,000, Dartmouth had three qualify: Betsy Burke '06 qualified in a time of 17:19.59, Kristin Andrews '03 ran 17:20.52 and Sara Lewicke '06 was the other qualifier, finishing in 17:22.94. Megan Malgeri '03 was the final qualifier, as she ran 9:57.86 in the 3,000.

Burke qualified though this is not ever her best event. "Qualifying for ECACs was a goal for my season in the 3k," she said, "but it was great that I could in the 5k. Hopefully I'll get the 3k qualifying time next time I run it."

While not even getting to run the event of her choice this weekend, Burke is already looking ahead to March 1, when Dartmouth hosts the Heptagonal Championship.

"For the team, I think our ultimate goal is to win Heps," she added. "That would be so great, especially since we're hosting it."

Both track teams host the Dartmouth Invitational this weekend in Leverone Field House. The first gun goes off at noon on Saturday.
